As you may have read in my last blog post, while it was the Minnesota Deer Archery Opener

opening weekend in Northern Minnesota. And in the lull of the weekend, I was about to mark a hunt off my list: a grouse hunt. If you’ve ever considered hunting this elusive game bird, or upland birds in general, I highly recommend giving it a shot! (All puns intended) Here is a snapshot of my experience, and a recipe for your enjoyment.

The Anticipation

The afternoon of the hunt was filled with a mix of excitement and nerves. The afternoon was cooling off, and the air was becoming crisp, carrying a hunt of autumn’s promise. Armed with my 20-guage Remington 1100 Wingmaster Shotgun and donning my blaze orange hat, I felt a little out of my hunting element, but the allure of the wild called out to me.

Into the Woods

The dense underbrush and vibrant foliage made the grouse’s natural habitat a beautiful maze to navigate. The rustling leaves, distant bird calls, and soft thuds of my boots against the ground became a harmonious symphony.

The Element of Surprise

One thing I’d heard about grouse hunting was that the birds often burst from the ground with a startling whoosh of wings. And trust me, nothing prepares you for that first heart-stopping flush! It’s an adrenaline rush like none other.

The Challenges

Grouse are known for their evasive tactics. Their zigzag flying pattern and the dense woods they inhabit make them a challenging target. Missing more than a few shots, I came to respect the skill seasoned hunters possess.

Moments of Reflection

During the quiet moments, I found myself admiring the beauty of the wilderness. The hunt was far less about the harvest and more about relaxing in nature, understanding the circle of life, and respecting the wildlife.

Final Thoughts

While I managed to bag some grouse, the day was more about the journey than the destination. The lessons I learned about patience, respect for nature, and the thrill of the chase are immeasurable.

If you are considering a grouse hunt for the first time my advice is this: Go with an open heart, respect the woods, and savor every moment. It’s not just about the hunt, but the memories you create along the way.

And to cap off a wonderful experience, here's the recipe for Bacon Wrapped Grouse with Mushrooms.

Stay Safe & Happy Hunting!
